Imagine this:
You have a second account with 86400 dollars in it. You are free to spend it however you like. To make it even better, it refills itself to this same amount every single day without fail.
Now suppose…
Suppose that on a certain day, someone steals 10 dollars from your account.
What do you do?
Would you spend the remaining money inside your bank account to get back at this person, to get justice, or to get your 10 dollars back?
Or would you rather shrug it off, knowing that, while this person did you wrong, it is overall, insignificant?
The Invisible Bank Account
Many people would probably argue that it would be a waste to spend the remainder of the money to get the little bit that was stolen back. Yet, in practice, many people do allow themselves to be robbed of the rest of the bank account.
The bank account of course is a metaphor, it represents time.
Every day you are given 24 hours. This breaks down to 1440 minutes each day, and you may have guessed it: 86400 seconds.
Here’s the perspective:
Think of the 10 dollars stolen as someone being rude to you for no reason, cutting in front of you in traffic, or in some way showing unpleasant behavior.
It may only be a couple of seconds where it happens, yet as you may know, the thoughts about it can stick with you for the rest of the day. Sometimes you may be thinking about it for days to come.
Strange, isn’t it?
Whereas most people wouldn’t throw away the rest of the money to get justice for the few dollars stolen, they would spend the rest of their time pondering the incident. In turn, allowing themselves to feel bad about it.
A Lesson About Time
You have a choice.
With every second you choose your future. Allowing yourself to linger over something small robs you of your time where you could be doing something productive.
Or doing something that makes you happy, instead of sad or angry!
Think of time like that. It’s a finite resource, use it wisely.
Especially with little setbacks and unpleasant situations, it is important to put things into perspective. In the grand scheme of things, they are not significant, not worth the time to dwell over all day.
It’s like losing a dollar to save a penny!
